The Importance of X-Rays
At a typical visit to the dentist, you will notice that X-rays are included. Why are these so vital? Learn about the importance of X-rays.
They Give Your Dentist "X-ray" Vision
ADA.org explains, “Dentists use X-rays to help diagnose damage and disease that is not visible during a clinical dental examination.” Unless your dentist is Superman, he cannot see everything going on in your teeth! X-rays give your dentist the necessary technology to check for such things as oral decay and infection. If you have a cavity in between your teeth for example, the naked eye cannot easily see this. The X-ray however will expose the decay by showing a dark spot. Then, necessary treatment can be performed to prevent further issues.
Do X-rays Present Any Danger?
Many are nervous when it comes to X-rays because they fear radiation poisoning. If this is something you have also wondered about, there is no need to fear. The modern digital X-ray produces such a low amount of radiation, that both kids and adults can safely have X-rays. Additionally, a lead shield is placed on you during X-rays that protects all vital organs. As you can see, a dental radiograph is not only important but perfectly safe.
Types of X-rays
Learn about the most common types of X-rays and their purpose below:
Bitewing: When a doctor needs to check for such things as decay, examine existing dental work and check bone levels, he will likely look at the bitewings. As a bitewing is taken, you will be asked to bite on a piece of paper that is holding the sensor in place against your teeth. Typically, 4 of these will be taken at your 6 month dental check-up.
Panoramic: This X-ray produces a 360 degree image as a machine rotates around your head. This is then used to determine such things as jaw health, Orthodontic treatment, and oral surgery treatment.
Periapical: This will capture your entire tooth from crown to root. A typical 6 month visit will include a periapical of both your upper and lower anterior teeth.
