Why Are X-Rays Important?
Have you ever wondered, “Why are x-rays important?”. We are happy if you have because we have the answers.
ADA.org explains, “Dentists use X-rays to help diagnose damage and disease that is not visible during a clinical dental examination.” As a side point, X-rays are also known as Radiographs. As was stated before, the naked eye cannot detect certain things that only a Radiograph can. For example, this would include decay that is in between teeth. If you get your X-rays at every 6 month visit, you are taking preventative measures for healthy teeth!
Are X-rays Dangerous?
Some patients are very nervous when getting X-rays since they think it is dangerous. We can understand how people can feel this way. However, your mind can be at ease in knowing that Radiographs at the dental office are considered safe for both children and adults. Additionally, know that the lead vests we have you wear protect all your vital organs!
Types of Radiographs
In addition to the the many types of X-rays, 3 of the most common types are listed below:
Bitewing: The doctor will have these taken when he wants to check such things as dental crowns, bone level, and cavities between teeth. The Hygienist or dental assistant will ask you to bite down on a special piece of paper with this technique.
Panoramic: Do you need your wisdom teeth or jaw health checked? Or maybe an Orthodontist needs to plan Orthodontic care. All of these use a Panoramic X-ray. This technique involves your standing in place as the machine does a 360 degree rotation around your head.
Periapical: This is used to focus on a specific tooth, capturing the entire tooth.
